I recently tried out Rio Cafe. It is a bit of a higher class place but within my range of acceptable eateries. I had the Creamy Sage Chicken. It's chicken with sage garlic sauce with a side of poblano mashed potatoes and a skewer of grilled vegetables. Here's my breakdown.
Chicken: Awesome. Simply excellent. The chicken is tender and juicy and the sauce is amazing. I immediately wanted the recipe.
Potatoes: The potatoes are smooth but lightly chunky with an excellent nip of spice provided by the slivers of poblano peppers.
Vegetables: There are slices of zucchini, onion, bell pepper, and mushroom. I like onion and bell pepper and they are delicious. The zucchini however is an oddity. I normally don't like zucchini simply because it has a bland taste and disgusting texture but the chef did an excellent job with the vegetables. The zucchini was first buttery, then zucchini-y and then buttery again and then salty. I actually enjoyed it. The mushrooms were rather dessicated however so I did not eat them.
Overall food: I enjoyed every piece of my meal. It was excellent in taste and nicely filling. Before I tried the food I thought the prices were a tad high but after eating there I realised they were quite acceptable for the quality.
Other things:
Decor: The building was clearly a different kind of place before it was a restaurant. Through discussion we decided it was a german restaurant. It is a touch odd.
Music: The music is all latin. Sometimes it's good, sometimes not so much. In this instance it had amusing timing. As we waited for our food the music was severely annoying. After the food arrived it was much nicer but became repetitive and annoying as we talked after eating. It seems a bit of a luck of the draw.
Overall: 9/10
